PrintEmailNewsletterPost CommentsRSS He has produced some of the biggest and most popular serials on STAR Jalsha, and Ravi Ozha has been roped in by Gaurav Banerjee, Head Content Strategy, STAR Plus, to make Sasural Genda Phool that goes on air from March 1. The story revolves around Suhana, a pampered daughter of an affluent father who agrees to marry Ishaan at her father’s behest. Suhana is played by Ragini Khanna, who was last seen in Bhaskar-Bharti. The other in the cast include Jai Soni, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Sudhir Pandey, Anita Khanwal, Mahesh Thakur, Sooraj Thapar and Shruti Ulfat.
Shruti Ulfat, who made a blink-and-miss appearance in Behenein, is happy to play the chhoti bahu in Sasural Genda Phool. “I play a chilled-out, happy-go-lucky bahu who is likable and emotional,” she reveals. In the serial, which Shruti describes as “a light-hearted soap” every couple has had a love marriage. The actor tries hard to get her son married in the serial. “Even grandfathers tease him by saying, ‘At your age, I already had a wife. We are getting tired of finding a girl for you.’” Shruti said that there is no jealousy or controversy in the plotline and “she has no qualms when her husband gives his salary to the elder bahu.”
Sai Deodhar back with Kaashi
Sai Deodhar, who has been missing from action for quite sometime - she was last seen in a Ek Ladki Anjaani Si- will be back in the new Imagine show Kaashi. Sai plays Eshwari, a dehati and a mother to a six year old girl, Jannat. Talking about the show, Sai says, “It’s a challenging role as this is the first time I am playing a village girl. So far I have played urban roles, be it in Saara Akash, Don or Ek Ladki Anjaani Si. Besides, the show is produced by Rupali, whom I have known for long. I had earlier shot for the pilot of her Tumhari Disha but couldn’t do the serial because I had taken up Saara Akash and did not have the dates. So, this time when she called, I agreed immediately.” The story dwells on the mother-daughter relationship. Set in one of the villages from the North, it deals with the caste system. Eshwari belongs to a lower caste, which is why her daughter is unable to study. “It is only the mother who understands her and tries to help her in every way,” says Sai. Incidentally, in the last one year, Sai was shooting along with her husband Shakti Anand for the film Gharounda directed by her mother Shrabani Deodhar. The film is produced by AB Corp. “It’s about a couple, who wants to retain their house in Mumbai, despite pressure from the builders who want their land,” informs Sai who says the film is light just like Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films. Shakti, meanwhile will also be back on the telly with Sony’s God Bharai.
Deepika in Lift Kara De
If Kirron Kher played badminton with Abhishek Bachchan on Bingo, Deepika Padukone has played the shuttle game with host Karan Johar in Lift Kara De this week. Being with the ace director, Deepika didn’t miss the opportunity to ask him when he will cast her in his film, to which the savvy Karan replied that he has been getting a lot of requests to cast her with Shahid Kapoor! Remains to be seen if Deepika’s wish comes true.

In the days running up to the release of Aamir Khan’s latest production Peepli Live — a dark comedy on the widening gap between rural and urban lives — first-time director Anusha Rizvi is quite nervous. Her anxiety is matched by that of 40-year-old Omkar Das Manikpuri of Brindanagar village in Chhattisgarh, the lead actor in the movie, who wants the film to hit the box-office
soon, only so that he can go and shake hands with his idol— actor Amitabh Bachchan
.
Manikpuri plays the lead role of Natha in Peepli Live that releases on August 13. “Since childhood, I have been a huge fan of Mr Bachchan. I am hoping he comes for the film premiere,” he says.
“All this seems like a dream. It is quite unbelievable. My friends and family back in the village call me and talk about the promos on television. I feel really happy when they say all such nice things. Aamir ji recently made me meet the Love Aaj Kal heroine— Deepika ji (Padukone). She was very nice to me too,” says Manikpuri.
It’s a far cry from his days as a street artiste in Chhattisgarh, where he would take part in the local form of folk theatre called Nacha, honing his skills as a singer, actor and a stand-up comedian over the course of shows. But, so far, Manikpuri seems quite unaffected by the hype around his debut film.
He talks in fluid Chhattisgarhi Hindi, and tells us how it was easy slipping in to the shoes of Natha, a farmer in Peepli. “I could do this film because I did not have to do any homework on how I have to look or how I have to talk. I just needed to get acquainted with the camera and Anushaji helped me with that,” says Manikpuri, who would take up construction work occasionally to substantiate his livelihood and provide for his seven-member family, including his three kids. “We did not have our own land. My father was a bonded labourer. After he died, there were financial problems, so I got into folk theater with a local mandali in my village,” he says.
He joined Habib Tanvir’s Naya Theater group in Bhopal and was spotted by Rizvi and Mohammad Farooqui, the co-director of the film, in the popular play Charandas Chor before auditioning for Natha’s role in Bhopal.
Manikpuri’s best friend on the sets was Shalini Vatsa who plays the role of Dhania— Natha’s wife. “It was nice meeting great actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Raghubir Yadav, but Shalini ji helped me a lot by explaining things really well. All the difficult scenes were taken care of by her,” says Manikpuri.
The biggest problem he faces in Mumbai though, is not knowing English. “Sab angrezi mein hi patar patar karte hai yahan. (Every one here speaks solely in English.) But this also gives me the inspiration to make sure that I educate my children properly,” says Manikpuri.
His wife and 19-year-old daughter are his biggest fans, he says with a touch of pride. “They are glued to the television these days,” he adds.
It is probably the reason why Manikpuri is in a hurry to get back home. “I am beginning to get offers from Bollywood and the Chhattisgarh film industry. But all this is too overwhelming for me. I want to spend some time with my family after the film’s release and then get back to work later,” he says.
But before that, there is the meeting with Big B to look forward to.

'I never thought that I would ever work in a film, neither did I plan to work in movies. Till now I feel that I am into some dream world,' the Chhattisgarh-based theatre actor said.
'I would like to work more in this industry and especially with Aamir Khan. Aamirji is a person with a very big heart. He is so down to earth and speaks so well. He never lets me feel that I am with such a big actor, director and producer,' Omkar told IANS in an exclusive interview.
Directed by debutant Anusha Rizvi and prouduced by Aamir Khan Productions Pvt Ltd, 'Peepli Live' is a satire on farmers' suicides and the subsequent response from the media and political parties.

He remembers his first day on the sets. 'I was quite nervous on the first day. There was a big camera, people were setting lights, director was shouting silence.
'I got scared after seeing the setup. I was not sure whether I would be able to deliver or not. Then Anushaji said that there is of course some difference between performing on stage and in front of the camera, but it's not that big. She asked me to work as if I was on stage. But next day I was comfortable in front of the camera.'
